Today was an exciting day at the Indy 500 -- Carb day, not really sure why it is called Carb day, but it is the day of the Pit Crew Challenge (which just happens to be the reason we are here!). So, first up was Marco Andretti (Tom's team) against Dario Franchitti, Marco blew him away setting the pace for the rest of the teams. Then came Danica against Tony Kanaan and (an Andretti Green Racing showdown), Danica taking that one but Marco's time was still standing tall. Then it all came apart when Helio Castroneves took his heat (and is the 3 time champ) when he posted a time almost a full second faster than Marco's team. In the end it came down to Marco Andretti and Helio Castrovenes...I was so nervous I was shaking (good thing I don't work in the pits). With $100, 000 dollars on the line and a chance to upset the current champ Tom and the crew came up just a little bit short...Helio was now the 4 time champ. It was none the less extremely exciting and we all thought second was not such a bad place to be.
We also were able to catch the Indy Lights Freedom 100 (40 laps), my first taste of an Indy Race. I didn't know any of the drivers and it was hard to root for someone at first but then one of the drivers caught my eye with his slick moves and I found myself rooting for Wade Cunningham. It is a race that takes less than an hour but we found ourselves waiting through 2 cautions where both of the women drivers were taken out by the men in turn two. The second involving Anna Beatrice was a big hit and she appeared to be unconcious when the crews got to her. In the end however, Wade Cunningham pulled it off and took 1st but not by much it was a close race to the finish.
